Your landing page (mentioned above) can be a sales page or an opt-in page. Since we are talking about list building, we will presume your landing page is an opt-in page where you are trying to get people to enter their name and email to join (or opt into) your email list. The number of people who join your list divided by the number who see your landing page is the Conversion Ratio.

Opt-in Conversion Ratio = OCR = (# who join your list)  divided by  (# who see your opt-in page)

Let's assume your ad was well targeted, and your landing page is good. If 10 of those 100 people who landed on your landing page sign up, your OCR is 10% . . . which is pretty good.

So if you paid $30 for advertising to 10,000, and get 10 people to join your list, you paid $3 per lead.

Once people have joined your list, you still have 2 more conversion ratios to worry about.

The first is the number of people who click-through from your emails, and the second is how many people then purchase the product.

 The number who click through from your emails depends on the quality of your list and how well you craft your email ad. The number who buy the product depends on how well you pre-sell them in the email and the quality of the sales page.

So the traditional List Building Sales Funnel has 4 advertising filters you have to get right before you make money:

1. The Click-Through Rate (CTR) for your ads
2. The Opt-In Conversion Rate (OCR) for your opt-in landing page (where people can join your list)
3. The Email Conversion Rate (which could also be considered an Email Click-Through Rate, or ECTR)
4. The Sales Conversion Rate (CR).

This is why having your own list is so valuable.

When you have your own list, you can skip the first two filters and advertise for free.

And as long as you keep your subscribers happy and responsive (and that's a big If . . .), you can make money with every relevant offer you send out.
