What Is Lead Science?

When you advertise, only a portion of people who see your ad will actually click the ad to visit your landing page; the ratio of viewers to clickers is the Click-Through Ratio (CTR). For example, if 10,000 people see your ad, and 100 click the ad, then your CTR is 1%.

A Brief Word About Paid Advertising Versus Free Marketing

I will keep this brief, but it is useful to understand the trade-offs between paid advertising and free marketing and the impact on your Click-Through Ratio (CTR).

First, paid advertising is worthless (and very expensive) unless you target your advertising directly to people interested in your niche. So assuming you use targeted paid advertising, the advantages are (1) you get fast results, (2) you can easily measure the results, and (3) you can quickly adjust your advertising in most cases. The primary disadvantage is the cost which can be extremely high when you consider paying $10 to $50 per click with Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising in some highly competitive niches. But even if you only pay 20 cents per click, 100 clicks would cost you $20. In the case of PPC, you are bypassing the CTR threshold since you only pay per click, but if your conversion ratio (discussed below) is low, you could still lose a lot of money.

Free marketing techniques, on the other hand, tend to be slow, less targeted, and take a lot of time . . . time to set up and time to get visitors. Free techniques include things like setting up your site to rank in the search engines (SEO), classified ads, article marketing, posting on blogs and forums, etc. The primary advantage of free marketing is it costs you no money.

A third option is available as well: Guaranteed Sign-Ups. The idea here is you pay a service to get you a certain number of people to join your list or program. The cost is usually low (e.g., 10 cents to a few dollars per sign-up), but the people are typically paid to join. Thus, they join, get paid, and disappear or do nothing, and that makes Guaranteed Sign-ups worthless. After all, what is the point of list building if your subscribers are non-responsive?

Once those who click through your ad (i.e., the clickers) reach your landing page, only a portion of them will actually enter their information and join your list. The ratio of those who join versus those who view the landing page is typically called your Opt-in Rate or Conversion Rate (CR).

For example, if 100 people see your landing page per day and 10 actually join your list, your CR would be 10% (i.e., 10 sign ups / 100 visitors). As you might expect, your Conversion Rate is highly dependent on your landing page design and the benefits you offer for joining your list. These benefits could be product information, discounts, useful or entertaining information, or gifts for joining. Once you get people on your list, you need to take care of them properly to keep them happy and responsive so they do not Unsubscribe.

Once people join your list and become Subscribers, you will be relying on emails to motivate them to buy something. How well your emails get your subscribers to visit your offers is your Email Conversion Rate, and how many actually buy based on the design and apparent benefits of the sales offer is yet another Conversion Rate (i.e., your Sales Conversion Rate).

As you can see, there is a lot of filtering at each point in the process, and that is where Lead Science steers off the well-beaten path.
